Resize product images for Shopify

Square, consistent, compressed — the three things a product grid needs from its photography.

Consistency matters more than resolution

A product grid looks unprofessional when images are different shapes, because the theme pads or crops them unpredictably and the products appear to be different sizes. Padding every photograph to the same square canvas on a white field fixes the grid in one pass, regardless of what came out of the camera.

2048 × 2048 is a generous ceiling that supports zoom without producing files that slow the page down.

Weight is a storefront problem

Product pages load a dozen or more images, and the largest contentful paint on a collection page is usually a photograph. Converting to WebP at quality 80 to 85 typically cuts file size by a third or more against JPEG at visually equivalent quality — meaningful when it applies to every image in a catalogue.

Shopify serves resized variants of what you upload, so uploading a 6000-pixel master is not helpful. Cap the dimensions before uploading and the whole pipeline gets faster.

Filenames become URLs

Uploaded filenames end up in image URLs and alt-text defaults. Renaming a batch to a SKU-plus-angle pattern before upload — sku-1042-front, sku-1042-side — makes the media library navigable and gives search engines something meaningful. A padded sequence keeps angles in a predictable order.

Zoom, retina and what to upload

Themes serve images at several sizes and modern screens request the denser variant, so the file you upload sets the ceiling for both. Uploading at 2048 pixels square means the zoom viewer has something to magnify and high-density screens have a sharp variant to request.

Uploading below that is the quiet failure: Shopify will not upscale, so an undersized product photo is served as-is and looks soft on any recent laptop or phone. The opposite mistake, uploading camera masters, costs upload time and storage without producing a single extra pixel on screen.

Questions

What size should Shopify product images be?
Square, up to 2048 × 2048. Consistency across the catalogue matters more than the exact number.
Should I upload WebP or JPEG?
Either works; Shopify generates its own variants. WebP uploads are smaller to begin with, which speeds up the upload itself.
How do I get a consistent white background?
Use Pad mode with a white background colour. That standardises the canvas — it does not remove an existing background from the photograph.
