2:3 is the ratio that gets shown

Pinterest is a vertical medium and 2:3 — 1000 × 1500 — is the shape its layout is built around. Taller pins were once favoured and are now truncated; wider pins occupy less column height and attract less attention. Standardising a batch at 2:3 is the single highest-impact change for most accounts.

Cropping horizontal photography

Turning landscape photographs into 2:3 discards more than half the frame, which makes the focal point control the important setting rather than an afterthought. For interiors and food, a top-weighted crop usually preserves the subject; for full-length fashion, the top of frame is where faces live.

Where a crop cannot work, Pad mode fits the whole image onto a 1000 × 1500 canvas with a background colour of your choosing, which is a common and perfectly acceptable pin style.

Text on pins

Pins are usually read at a few hundred pixels wide in a mobile grid. Text baked into the image needs to be large and high contrast, and positioned away from the edges where the card crops. Keep a consistent margin across a batch by padding before adding a text watermark rather than placing text at the extreme edge.

One image, several pins

A single photograph can support several pins with different crops and text treatments, which is the normal way accounts test what works without reshooting. The 2:3 frame is fixed; what changes is which part of the image fills it and where the text sits.

That is a batch operation rather than a design session: process the same source with a top-weighted crop, then again with a bottom-weighted one, then again padded onto a colour. Three passes take seconds once the originals are loaded, and the outputs are named so you can tell which is which.
